ARTIST STATEMENT

What torments me is loneliness. I believe the source of loneliness is not a feeling of solitude but an intrinsic fear of death, which we must carry until the day that we die. Because of this I constantly strive to accept death without fear.
I hypnotize myself in order to escape the pain by ridding death’s obsession from my body. I visualize the universe as one organism and human beings as cell groups that are constituents of that organism. As I consider all the parts of my body as myself, all the things in the universe become myself if I become a constituent material in the organic being that is the universe. The world and everything in it becomes a part of my being, linked by invisible lines as I expand my recognition. When we look at the visible, everything in this world seems to have a distinct individual existence. However, existentially, all living and non-living things exist as a single organic being; perpetually connected through cause and effect.
My artwork expresses these interconnected relationships. Glass panes of different colors and designs appear physically distinct; however each piece is invisibly and internally linked through its underlying ceramic elements. These common organic forms represent our shared existence through time and space.

Liquid structure connecting life with death

Lee Sunyoung (Art critic)

Kim Hakyoung’s work carries a special mark indicating it is her own creation. Like an autograph, the very mark never fails to appear on her pieces created at different times. The knotty bumpy colony found throughout her world of art is the very mark, which implies many of her works converge on one essence despite different looks. Her glaze experiments have brought in diverse skin effects, whereas those bumps constitute a constant transcending those variables. Those bumps appear to be cells or the basic units of organic bodies, and more fundamentally have atavistic genes transcending a single organism, since they are omnipresent. The colonies differ in size across her works. Despite their slight difference in color, they are seated inside and outside of various forms of objects from bird cages to artifacts, and thrust in everywhere in our everyday life. As if they are part of the eco-system of interest to the artist, they are seated anywhere as they please.

Seemingly, they grow out of the surface. These bumps are akin to villus cells typically found in placentas or intestinal walls. These abstract forms have both animal and vegetable or pulpy aspects. The villi have evolved to maximize the body surface area. Their shapes functionally help absorb the moisture or nutrients necessary for individuals’ energy production. In that respect, this exhibition features quite a few pieces referring to the eco-system characterized by the relationship between preys and predators. There exists hunger and satiety related to the intestinal sense. That is a ruthless game of survival at the cost of other creatures. Yet, the endless food chain renders life and death inseparable, and coerces us into accepting the universal situation as the law of nature, neither a tragedy nor a comedy. Towels used in everyday life imitate the villus structure. Those forms in themselves feel soft and warm, spontaneously reminding users of the organic forms.
Kim Hakyoung’s villiform pieces are ivory, apricot ivory or yellowish white, delivering a feeling of warm organisms. The cross sections inside are crammed with the structure. Such cross sections emphatically present the continuity or mobility of the villi. The cross sections are primarily those of structures and motions. The smooth silhouette of a pocket crammed with dense villi in her [Preys] crouches down but is poised to overturn, if ever stirred. Like the Mobius strip, the inside and outside are indistinguishable. The creases inside fold and unfold to respond flexibly to surroundings. As implied in Gilles Deleuze’s [Folds], the folding and unfolding of creases takes place from the embryonic stage of life. Embryology demonstrates two heterogeneous cells meet to fertilize, and go through numerous cell divisions to grow into an individual.

The similar-looking colonies constituting each unit evoke some potential compathy. To exert the effects, the bumps need to move in addition to the structure. It is a liquid structure. The moment that those multiple units rub against one another is structured. Making forms out of the malleable clay followed by glazing and firing means the rebirth of something soft into something hard, where the artist leaves the initial softness to the finished ceramic forms. Kim says ‘the clay fired into pottery in the hot kiln is like a frozen man placed in liquid nitrogen to stop the death clock’. She imagines that earth is moist and same as a vital life, but once placed in the kiln, it stops its time of life and stiffens. Firing to harden the clay coupled with his unique imagination of the basics of pottery has given birth to his selective forms intended to leave the sense of a soft and warm organism.

The inseparable masses in her [Preys and Predators] have a heavy binding force, which would not match the title and be unimaginable in the hostile sight of the preys. In [Links in a Chain] with acrylic strata put on the frame, a few strata work together. Different colors connected from tail to tail generate a circular silhouette. Kim formulates networks between separate objects. Bumps themselves are a relational, rather than self-sufficient, structure. As manifested in [Links in a Chain], his pieces combining the materials somewhat alien to pottery also stress the relationship. The relationship between I and others overrides many other relations in the world, and engenders a profound life-death link. Loosening up one’s boundary is an expansion and death. Kim says, ‘My suffering comes from the fear resulting from the finite self of my body,’ adding he would be part of the universe ‘by giving up my obsession with myself and thus becoming free from the suffering’.

In the world of death linked to the whole, death is not an absolute but relative passage in life. The idea of shifting the perception of death and thus freeing from the fear thereof is emblematic of the Buddhist belief in Samsara, or the eternal cycle of birth. Yet, Kim focuses on the cycle of life, being wary of the hierarchical thoughts intrinsic to Samsara. The titles [Preys and Predators] and [Preys] represent the cycle of life. A snake preys on a goat in the [Preys and Predators], whilst the [Preys] indirectly portrays humans eating animals at the apex of the food chain. Here, two lives are intertwined into one. In that preys are predators at the same time, the food chain involves symbiotic, not hostile, relationships. Fritjof Capra, in [The Web of Life], emphasizes symbiosis more than competition. Citing biologist Lynn Margulis’ symbiogenesis, he conjectures the creation of new living things via permanent symbiotic arrangements as the primary evolutionary path of all higher animals. He gives an example of mitochondria, which were originally freely floating bacteria and infiltrated into other microorganisms in the distant past before settling therein permanently. In that case, symbiosis led to a permanent combination. The symbiotic combination begets new forms of life. In the same vein, the bumps that become a constant in Kim’s works of art compel us to perceive the difference(discontinuity) as much as the similarity (or continuity), specifically, the relationship in differences.

The ‘emergence of symbiosis as a new path of evolutionary creation’(Margulis) is applicable to culture as well. It redefines art as the competition for some unprecedented novelty. In a world where all things are connected, the originality unheard of is a self-contradictory notion. So is abandoning the self-obsession. The hypothesis proposed in contemporary biology, e.g. Richard Dawkins’ [The Selfish Gene], asserts individuals are not that significant.

Individuals are nothing more than tools conveying genes to those of the following generation. Here, the protagonist is not individuals but their genes. In a world where genes are heroes, distinguishing life from death is meaningless. In Kim Hakyoung’s works of art, I can become others by loosening up the boundary, where the ‘others’ include not only other people but also animals and plants. It was when her grandmother passed away that made Kim think over death as a student. To break away from the sense of futility and fear, Kim linked her watch with her. Kim’s pieces go beyond a simple aesthetic representation, to play some shamanistic and religious roles. Unless art plays such holistic roles, we would focus on the ruthless sacrifice required of creative activities. Art has multiple tangents like villiform cells. They protect themselves at some times, and absorb what is given before them to the maximum for their self-sustained growth.
